PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – The leader of an armed group who took over a national wildlife refuge in Oregon weeks ago attended a tense community meeting last night and listened as residents chanted at him to “go, go, go.” Some of the several hundred people there spoke to Ammon Bundy directly. One thanked him for raising awareness around issues of public lands, but told him it’s time to leave. Many others voiced anger at Bundy’s group as well as the local and federal government for what some said was a lack of effort to end the takeover.
ASTORIA, Ore. (AP) – A former Warrenton chiropractor who was convicted of sexually harassing eight patients is facing a new trial on sex abuse charges. The Daily Astorian reports the trial for 60-year-old Adam Lopez is scheduled to begin in May. Lopez was given a one-year prison sentence in 2014 after eight women accused him of sexually harassing them during appointments. Four more women have come forward.
BEAVERTON, Ore. (AP) – The Beaverton Police Department has received a $150,000 grant to begin outfitting its officers with body cameras. KOIN-TV reports that the two-year federal grant will allow the Beaverton department to be a pilot program for other law enforcement agencies. The department plans to purchase 100 cameras.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – When a magnitude 9.0 earthquake and tsunami strike the Pacific Northwest, which seismologists say could happen in our lifetime, it will likely be the worst natural disaster in U.S. history. To prepare for such a calamity, emergency officials over the past few years have been working together on contingency plans intended to lessen the loss of life and put the region in a better position to recover.
