A new approach to prep wrestling debuts in Florence

On the mats tonight… Siuslaw Wrestling will host the other five Far West league teams in a new format meet. Viking coach Neil Wartnik says it’s not your typical “league” dual meet.

Neil Wartnik – “Because we’ve had a shortage of numbers in some schools, the dual meet has kind of lost its energy. And so, we’re going to a different format, we’re running it like a tournament.”

Wartnik says this will be a new way of doing things…

Neil Wartnik – “We’re the pilot ship in Florence. We’re bringing in all five other of the Far West schools. And we’re going to put all the varsity people from each team; we’re going to pit them against each other. Some of the boys may have five matches tonight.”

Wrestling gets under way at 4:30… Wartnik compared the competition style as being similar to the way Olympic wrestling is scored.
