Siuslaw’s Richard Huff swept the 113 pound weight class at Saturday’s Perry Burlison Wrestling Classic at Cascade High School. Huff won all three of his matches Saturday by 3-nothing decisions. Three other Viking Wrestlers, went one-and-two on the day: Murray Bingham at 132; Talamoa Tupua at 160; and at 285 pounds, Kainan Lane.

Matthew Morales went 0-2 at 106 pounds and Scott Simmons also was 0-2 at 145.

The Viking Girls fell in their opening basketball game at home, 71-23, to the Coquille Red Devils.  Destinie Tatum led scoring with 11 points; Abby Watkins had two assists.  They turned it around the next afternoon in Phoenix where they defeated the Pirates 45-31.  Tatum led scoring again with 15 points, Sierra Potter was also in double figures with ten; Taylor Dotson and Claire Waggoner had six each.  Siuslaw will be at Newport tomorrow night.

Boys basketball, the Red Devils spoiled the Siuslaw boys’ opener Friday night, winning 72-47. Phoenix came out on top the next afternoon; 55-38. Siuslaw will host Newport tomorrow night.

In Mapleton,

The Sailors fell to the Brookings-Harbor JV Saturday in both halves of a twin-bill… the Girls losing 39-26; the boys 75-38.  Alyssa Richards led the Lady Sailors with 11 points and 9 rebounds; Hunter Simington had 14 points, 3 rebounds and 3 steals.

College Hoops

UNLV ended Oregon’s six-game win streak Friday night, coming out on top 80-69 in Las Vegas.  The Ducks went scoreless in the final 3:31 and the Running Rebels defeated a top 25 team for the second time this season. The  Ducks are in Honolulu this evening where they’ll take on Navy at 6:30… airtime on Coast Radio Sports is at 6:00.

In Corvallis Saturday afternoon, Oregon State edged Nevada 66-62. Gary Payton II had 16 points and eight rebounds. Payton had two steals, setting a program record having at least one steal in 38 consecutive games. That record, by the way, was formerly held by his father.

Ducks and the Frogs at the Alamofeature

Remember the Alamo… that’s what the Oregon Ducks and the TCU Horned Frogs are saying today. The two teams will tee up in the Alamo Dome in San Antonio Saturday, January 2nd in the Alamo Bowl.
