SANDY, Ore. (AP) – An 80-year-old woman spent the night trapped in bed after a tree fell on her home east of Portland. The Sandy Fire District says it was alerted yesterday morning by a neighbor who had gone to check on her. When firefighters arrived, the woman told them she had a few scratches but wasn’t hurt. Firefighters removed part of the deck railing with a chain saw and helped the woman down a ladder.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – A lawyer for a Portland landlord says he is suing the city over a new rule on rent increases because it goes against state law. KATU-TV reports that the rule requires landlords to give renters more notice before raising rents. City Commissioner Dan Saltzman says the new rule is not rent control, but instead offers renters in Portland’s competitive market more time to manage rent increases.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – An Oregon criminal defense lawyer has been indicted in federal court on tax charges. The Oregonian reports that a grand jury in Portland brought the 10-count indictment against Gary Bertoni yesterday. The government claims Bertoni failed to pay nearly $185,000 in payroll taxes from 2009 to 2011. Bertoni’s attorney says his client is being targeted because he is a criminal defense lawyer.

HOUSTON (AP) – James Harden scored 45 points, including all nine for Houston in overtime, and the Rockets beat the Portland Trail Blazers 108-103 last night after firing Kevin McHale earlier in the day. It almost ended with a fifth straight loss before Corey Brewer made his shot with 0.9 seconds remaining in regulation to tie the game at 99. The Blazers dropped their seventh straight, their worst losing streak since closing 2012-13 on a 13-game skid.
