Here is the latest Washington, Oregon and Alaska sports news from The Associated Press

CALGARY, Alberta (AP) – Daniel Sedin had a goal and two assists to help the Vancouver Canucks open the season with a 5-1 victory over the Calgary Flames last night. Jannik Hansen, Brandon Sutter, Alex Burrows and Henrik Sedin also scored for the Canucks in a rematch of last April’s Western Conference quarterfinals.

LOS ANGELES (AP) – Washington takes on USC in Los Angeles tonight, where a weekday game at the Coliseum is a rarity. Unlike UCLA coach Jim Mora, who has bemoaned the academic effects of Thursday games, Steve Sarkisian doesn’t mind, even though some Trojans will be taking midterms on game day. As usual, Washington’s starting lineup is dotted with players recruited out of the Los Angeles area.

UNDATED (AP) — For his first bye as Oregon State’s coach, Gary Andersen took some time last weekend to watch other teams play. No doubt he paid some attention to Arizona. The Beavers visit the Wildcats this weekend in Tucson. With its new spread offense, Oregon State goes against a coach – Rich Rodriguez – who innovated the no-huddle, run-oriented spread.

UNDATED (AP) — About the only thing that’s certain about the Oregon Ducks at quarterback is there’s a lot of uncertainty. Vernon Adams Jr., who has a broken index finger, sat out of last weekend’s 41-24 victory at Colorado while backup Jeff Lockie and former walk-on Taylor Alie tag-teamed for the Ducks. There could be more of the same this Saturday against Washington State. Coach Mark Helfrich isn’t saying if he’ll rotate QBs.
