Rescuers to be recognized

Two recent heart attack victims in Florence are still with us, primarily because of emergency CPR. Bystanders, a volunteer firefighter and police officers who intervened with emergency Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation on two occasions last month at the Port of Siuslaw Marina will be recognized at the scene of their heroism tomorrow morning at ten.

Western Lane Ambulance Spokesman Al Kreitz said the first incident was the afternoon of September 8th; The second was ten days later at nine in the morning. In both instances, the victims had recently come ashore after fishing… in both cases bystanders immediately took life-saving actions.

Kreitz, who did not identify the victims, said both men walked out of the hospital within days of their trauma.

One of the patients will be on hand along with EMTs. They’ll recognize those who performed the life-saving CPR.

Hear the beep where you sleep

Working smoke alarms provide an early warning and can allow residents time to escape a fire in the home… increasing chances of survival.

Oregon State Fire Marshal Jim Walker pointed out this week that most fire fatalities happen in the home between 11 PM and 8 AM.

October is Fire Prevention Month and Walker’s slogan this month is “hear the beep where you sleep”.

Oregonians are being urged to check their home smoke detectors to ensure they are working properly. Walker adds that you should make sure you have one on each level of your home and one in each sleeping area.

Local fire authorities concur. Siuslaw Valley Fire and Rescue will check your smoke detectors for you and make sure they are placed properly. Firefighters are planning on hosting an open house later this month at the main fire station.

Fuel prices continue to fall

The average cash price for a gallon of regular gas in Florence has fallen by 60 cents in the past 30 days. At $2.14 a gallon, it’s the lowest it’s been in Florence since early February.

Florence’s average price fell three cents this past week while the Oregon average price, as measured by Triple-A tumbled seven cents.

But, that average is still 30-cents a gallon higher than the local price.

The national average price climbed by a penny a gallon this week… it’s at $2.30.

Exploring the difference between wild and hatchery raised fish

The senior scientist at the Oregon Hatchery Research Center, OSU Fisheries and Wildlife Professor Dr. David Noakes, will address members of the Florence Salmon Trout Enhancement Program this evening.

Noakes will review the history of the OHRC and talk about the research that is conducted at the facility in Alsea, just west of Corvallis.   That research is seeking answers to scientific questions related to fish recovery programs. It also explores the differences that may exist between wild and hatchery fish.

The Florence STEP group meets at 6:30 at the Florence Elks Lodge on 12th Street.
