ROSEBURG, Ore. (AP) – The father of a man who officials have identified as the shooter who opened fire at Umpqua Community College says he’s as shocked as anybody at the deaths of 10 people including his son, Chris Mercer. Ian Mercer told reporters outside his house in Southern California late last night that it’s been a “devastating day” for him and his family. Nine people were killed before the gunman shot himself dead.

ROSEBURG, Ore. (AP) – One witness of the mass shooting at Umpqua Community College said the gunman demanded to know students’ religion before shooting them yesterday. Students in a classroom next door heard several shots, one right after the next, and their teacher told them to leave. The gunman identified as Chris Mercer died following a shootout with police. Police were not saying whether they knew of any motive.

PENDLETON, Ore. (AP) – The Pendleton City Council has been asked to approve a lease with a $45 million data center at the Eastern Oregon Regional Airport. The East Oregonian reports that the council’s approval would finalize a 30-year lease with Makad Corp. to build a colocation data center on nearly 12 acres on Airport road. Makad is a Vancouver-based project development group.

SALEM, Ore. (AP) – A Salem woman says a man stole one of her 8 ½-week-old English bulldog puppies at gunpoint from inside her home. KPTV-TV reports that Lori Andrews had arranged for some potential buyers to meet her litter of puppies on Tuesday including a family with four children. When the kids chose a puppy, they returned to the car with their mother. Andrews says the man then pointed a gun at her and said he was taking the puppy free of charge.
