PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Amy Rodriguez scored off a header in the 78th minute and FC Kansas City sent midfielder Lauren Holiday into retirement with a 1-0 victory over the Seattle Reign for the National Women’s Soccer League championship game last night. Rodriguez scored off a cross from Heather O’Reilly. It was the Blues’ second straight championship.

SEATTLE (AP) – Seattle Sounders defender Chad Marshall has been released from the hospital a day after suffering a neck sprain in practice. The Sounders announced Marshall’s diagnosis yesterday. Marshall was injured during practice after colliding with a teammate and hitting his head on the ground during a drill. Marshall was attended to by team medical personnel before being taken away in an ambulance.

ALLEN PARK, Mich. (AP) – Detroit Lions wide receiver Golden Tate passed on a chance yesterday to clarify comments that created a stir. He said earlier in the week on WMGC-FM that opposing players have told him they knew what the Lions were going to do on offense after each of their three games this year. The winless Lions will travel to play the defending NFC champion Seattle Seahawks on Monday night.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) – Brett Anderson pitched two-hit ball into the eighth in his final regular-season start, and the NL West champion Los Angeles Dodgers wrapped up their road schedule with a 3-2 victory over the San Francisco Giants yesterday. Tim Hudson (8-9) allowed three runs and three hits in 2 1-3 innings in the final start of his 17-year big league career.
