Vikings and Sailors win on the gridiron; Woahink XC Invitational results; and college football.

Siuslaw avenges 2014 loss to the Lancers

Kenneth Thrall carried the ball 19 times for 101 yards and two touchdowns; plus intercepted a pass, as the Siuslaw Vikings opened the Far West League with a 28-7 drubbing of South Umpqua Friday night in Florence.

Scott Gordon caught a 35 yard touchdown pass from Preston Mitchell and Trent Reavis recovered a fumble in the win.

Elsewhere in the Far West: Marshfield dominated Brookings-Harbor by a score of 45-20; and North Bend rolled over Douglas 41-14.

Sailors send the Eagles packing

A.J. Foster had eight carries for 81 yards, two touchdowns and three conversions as the Mapleton Sailors beat the McKenzie Eagles 74-32. Foster also had a 70-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. Tyler Packebush added seven carries for 70 yards and two touchdowns, plus a 50-yard punt return for a TD.

Woahink Invitational run under sunny skies

West Linn claimed the boys’ crown; South Eugene won the girls’; in Saturday’s Woahink Invitational Cross Country meet at Honeyman State Park. The Viking girls were in third place paced by Junior Celie Mans who was second individually. Morgan Bingham as sixth; Kaeli Ramos was 15th.

Murray Bingham was the top finisher for Siuslaw in the boys’ race. He was 15th and the Viks were ninth as a team.

Prep Volleyball

On the volleyball court Saturday, Siuslaw lost a pair of non-league matches at Hidden Valley; losing in three to the Mustangs; and in four sets to Cottage Grove.

On the College gridiron

Kevin Hogan started at quarterback for number 21 Stanford and the Cardinal ran away from Oregon State in the second half for a 41-31 Pac-12 win in Corvallis.

Oregon is out of the Associated Press college football poll for the first time since 2009, snapping its streak of consecutive Top 25 appearances at 98. The Ducks were blasted at home, 62-20 by Utah Saturday night. It was the highest score ever allowed by Oregon at Autzen. It was also the first time in 11 seasons that the Ducks have had two losses in September.   Utah surged to number ten in the polls.
