ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) – Royal Dutch Shell PLC says it’s ceasing exploration in offshore Alaska for the foreseeable future. The company says an exploratory well drilled to 6,800 feet found oil and gas but not in sufficient quantities. Over the summer, protesters in kayaks unsuccessfully tried to block Arctic-bound Shell vessels in Seattle and Portland.
COTTAGE GROVE, Ore. (AP) – Deputies in western Oregon say they have arrested a suspect in the shooting of a deputy who was responding to a call. The Lane County Sheriff’s Office says 38-year-old Carlos Roa was taken into custody Saturday in Cottage Grove, south of Eugene. The injured deputy remains in stable condition at a hospital.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Contractors reportedly have been tearing down hundreds of Portland homes without properly removing the asbestos inside, a practice that ignores state regulations and could put workers at risk. An investigation by The Oregonian found that weak regulatory oversight from the Department of Environmental Quality allowed contractors to proceed with the hazardous demolitions.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – A Washington County jury has found a 19-year-old man guilty of manslaughter in the sledgehammer death of his great-grandmother at her suburban Portland home. The Oregonian reports the jury on Friday rejected aggravated murder and felony murder charges in Joda Cain’s case. Cain could face 10 years in prison for the death of 71-year-old Jacqueline Bell, who was killed in 2013.
