KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Lorenzo Cain singled home pinch-runner Paulo Orlando in the 10th inning, and the Kansas City Royals rallied past the Seattle Mariners 4-3 last night to close in on their first division title in 30 years. The victory reduced the Royals’ magic number to two for clinching the AL Central crown.

SEATTLE (AP) – Lamar Neagle scored two goals and the Seattle Sounders beat the Vancouver Whitecaps 3-0 last night to earn a spot in the CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinals. Seattle completed Group F play at 2-1-1 and seven points. Vancouver (1-1-1, 4 points) still can tie on points by beating Olimpia in Honduras on Oct. 22, but the Sounders own the tiebreaker on goal differential, 4-1. The teams drew 1-1 in Vancouver on Aug. 5.

RENTON, Wash. (AP) – Safety Kam Chancellor has ended his holdout and reported to the Seattle Seahawks after missing training camp and the first two weeks of the regular season. The Seahawks confirmed that Chancellor arrived at the team facility yesterday morning. It was his first appearance since June’s minicamp and ended a holdout that lasted nearly eight weeks.

UNDATED (AP) – A person close to the situation says Seattle Storm guard Jewell Loyd has won the WNBA rookie of the year award. The person spoke to The Associated Press late last night on condition of anonymity because no official announcement has been made. Loyd was the No. 1 pick in the WNBA draft in April after forgoing her senior year at Notre Dame.
