The Siuslaw sophomore leads team to a 2nd place finish

Cross Country Saturday morning… Siuslaw’s Celie Mans ran the Prefontaine Memorial 5K in Coos Bay in 18:58.3 seconds. She was second individually and led the Viking girls to a second place team finish behind St. Mary’s. Morgan Bingham was close behind Mans in 7th.

For the boys, freshman Murray Bingham was 17th individually in 17:41.4 seconds. The Vikings were sixth as a team. Grants Pass won the team title.

Friday night football:

Preston Mitchell carried the ball 17 times for 118 yards and two touchdowns, plus intercepted two passes and the Siuslaw Vikings ground out a 35-13 non-league win over the then fourth ranked Hidden Valley Mustangs. The Vikings moved up in the rankings from 20th to 11th, the Mustangs dropped to 12th.

In Triangle Lake, Hunter Simington carried the ball 22 times for 92 yards and both Sailor touchdowns, but the Lakers came out on top 61-12 in a Mountain West League game.

On the college gridiron:

Number 12 Oregon took out the frustration of losing to Michigan State the week before with a 61-28 blowout of Georgia State. Jeff Lockie got the start instead of an injured Vernon Adams Jr. Lockie threw for 228 yards and two touchdowns. Royce Freeman ran for 101 yards and a score.

In Corvallis, true freshman Seth Collins ran for two touchdowns and passed for another and the Beavers scored 21 unanswered points in the second half Saturday night to beat San Jose State 35-21. Collins had 16 carries for 114 yards including two touchdown runs. He completed 13 of 2 passes for 135 yards and one TD pass.
