GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) – Aaron Rodgers threw for two touchdowns and the Green Bay Packers outlasted the Seattle Seahawks for a 27-17 win Sunday night in a rematch of last season’s NFC title game. Rodgers orchestrated a 10-play, 80-yard scoring drive, capped by a 5-yard scoring pass to Richard Rodgers. A 2-point conversion made it 24-17 with 9:28 left. Jayrone Elliott made a lunging, one-handed interception of a short pass from Russell Wilson with 6:50 left, one of the rare mistakes in the second half for Seattle’s dual-threat quarterback. The Packers cashed in with one of Mason Crosby’s four field goals on the night for a 10-point lead with 2 minutes remaining.
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) – Felix Hernandez became the American League’s first 18-game winner, Robinson Cano drove in four runs and the Seattle Mariners beat the AL West-leading Texas Rangers 9-2 on Sunday. Texas’ division lead was trimmed to 1 1-2 games over second-place Houston.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Felipe and Damien Perrinelle scored 3 minutes apart late in the first half and the New York Red Bulls beat the Portland Timbers 2-0 on Sunday to become the first MLS team to clinch a playoff spot. New York (14-8-6) moved into first place in the Eastern Conference, a point ahead of Columbus. The Red Bulls have won three of four and 11 of 14.
TACOMA, Wash. (AP) – Pierce County officials say they’re still tallying their bills after hosting the U.S. Open golf tournament at Chambers Bay, but they expect they’ll at least break even. The News Tribune reports that county leaders say they may even collect enough revenue to pay off some debt incurred after the links-style course was built eight years ago.
