EUGENE, Ore. (AP) – The Eugene-Springfield area has seen a spike in violent crime over the past three months, including three deaths since Friday. The Register-Guard reports that murders, suicides and shootings have resulted in the deaths of 12 people over the summer in the area. Eugene averages about three murders in an entire year. Springfield averages about two.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Two stray hairs left on the exterior window ledge of a Portland home have led to the arrest of a man for a burglary in June 2014. The Oregonian reports that Lee Patrick Trevino was arraigned yesterday on first-degree burglary and theft charges. On Aug. 12, a state forensic scientist told police he had found those two hairs from the windowsill matched Trevino’s DNA profile.

MEDFORD, Ore. (AP) – Medford is considering borrowing funds or delaying or scaling back new police and fire stations because the project is about $6 million over budget. The Mail Tribune reports that the City Council is looking at $5 million more than estimated for both stations and another $900,000 for a parking garage facade. The project contractor says the added cost is because bids from subcontractors were higher than expected.

ALOHA, Ore. (AP) – Seven people are injured after a crash involving seven vehicles on the Tualatin Valley Highway west of Portland. Fire officials say four of the people sustained life-threatening injuries last night’s crash in Aloha. The Oregonian reports that all of the injured are hospitalized.
