JOHN DAY, Ore. (AP) – Firefighters are working to stop the spread of a group of central Oregon wildfires that have grown to 159 square miles and destroyed two more homes and a guest house. Firefighters built fire lines around the buildings and set up sprinklers but had to flee Saturday when winds gusted up to 50 mph and threatened their escape routes. About 950 firefighters are battling the blazes.

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) – Authorities in Eugene say a man lured his ex-wife’s boyfriend to a home where he shot him to death and then killed himself. Police say that 48-year-old Nicholas Hazel shot and killed 33-year-old John Tainton-Platts on Friday. Police say that after the shooting he sent a text message to his former wife stating he had just murdered Tainton-Platts and that he planned to next kill himself.

BEND, Ore. (AP) – Former state Rep. Dennis Richardson says he won’t run again for Oregon governor following his loss as the 2014 Republican candidate. The Bend Bulletin reports that Richardson, a Central Point attorney, lost last year’s race to former Gov. John Kitzhaber by 5 percentage points. Democratic Gov. Kate Brown stepped into the role when Kitzhaber resigned in February. She is widely expected to run next year to complete Kitzhaber’s term, but she has not confirmed her plans.

MADRAS, Ore. (AP) – A heavy-duty truck manufacturer says it will spend $18 million upgrading its research and development facility in central Oregon. Portland-based Daimler Trucks North America tells the Bend Bulletin that it plans to improve its test track in Madras and add maintenance and office buildings.
