SALEM, Ore. (AP) – Gov. Kate Brown plans to visit the eastern Oregon command post where fire crews are overseeing the effort to contain a wildfire that’s destroyed at least 26 homes and damaged 50 others. Brown gets a briefing this morning about firefighting efforts at the Grant County Fairgrounds in John Day. The fire has burned through about 63 square miles, mostly on the Malheur National Forest, and was zero percent contained.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Liquor sales in Oregon are higher than ever, thanks in part to a stronger economy and population growth. The Oregon Liquor Control Commission said that the spirits generated more than $1 billion in gross revenue for the 2013-2015 biennium. That’s 8 percent more than the previous biennium.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – The Oregon Employment Department says the state added 4,600 jobs last month, following a revised gain of 2,600 jobs in June. Job growth was strong in several industries last month, particularly construction. Despite the strong report, the jobless rate jumped from 5.5 percent to 5.9 percent.
SPRINGFIELD, Ore. (AP) – The city of Springfield is facing a lawsuit from the police department’s former cultural liaison who says she was fired for talking about racial profiling complaints at a community meeting. The Register-Guard reports Thelma Barone says she was put on administrative leave and eventually demoted to patrol duty before she was fired. A city spokesman says Barone was not fired due to her comments at the event.
