SEATTLE (AP) – Hisashi Iwakuma has become the second Japanese-born pitcher in major league history to throw a no-hitter, leading the Seattle Mariners to a 3-0 victory over the Baltimore Orioles yesterday. Iwakuma struck out seven and walked three in throwing the first no-hitter by an American League pitcher in nearly three years. He joins Hideo Nomo, who threw two no-nos, as the only Japanese-born pitchers to accomplish the feat.

SEATTLE (AP) – Nelson Cruz is not in the lineup for Seattle, a day after leaving the game against Baltimore with neck spasms. Seattle manager Lloyd McClendon sais he wanted to give Cruz the day off because the Mariners have an off-day today before beginning a series in Boston.

PHOENIX (AP) – Noelle Quinn made three of Phoenix’s 10 3-pointers and finished with 13 points to help the Mercury beat Seattle 83-66 last night for their ninth straight victory over the Storm. Phoenix is 1 1/2 games behind Western Conference-leading Minnesota, which clinched a playoff spot Tuesday night. Ramu Tokashiki and Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis each scored 14 points for Seattle (6-18).

SEATTLE (AP) – The Seattle Sounders’ midseason makeover continues as the club has signed Panamanian central defender Roman Torres. Seattle announced the signing of Torres yesterday, the third major signing by the club in the past 10 days. Seattle has also signed Paraguayan striker Nelson Valdez and Austrian midfielder Andreas Ivanschitz.
