SALEM, Ore. (AP) – Gov. Kate Brown has appointed a longtime state official to be the Oregon’s chief operating officer and head of the Department of Administrative Services. The governor’s office has announced that Clyde Saiki will take over Sept. 1. He’ll lead an agency responsible for technical and administrative support for the state bureaucracy. He’ll replace Michael Jordan, who was closely linked to former Gov. John Kitzhaber. Jordan stepped down weeks after Kitzhaber’s resignation.

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) – Universal background checks for private gun purchases became law in Oregon on Sunday, but enforcement remains murky. The Eugene Register-Guard reports some rural sheriffs have said they won’t enforce the law, while Lane County commissioners approved an ordinance calling the requirement an unfunded mandate that the community can’t afford to implement.

SPRINGFIELD, Ore. (AP) – The nearly century-old building that currently houses the Springfield school district headquarters is at a high risk of collapsing should a strong earthquake shake the city. The Eugene Register-Guard reports that the district plans to move employees out of the building following a report deeming it seismically unsound. But it’s not clear what will happen to the Mill Street headquarters.

PENDLETON, Ore. (AP) – A replica of the first American ship to visit the West Coast recently passed through the McNary Dam’s navigation lock. The East Oregonian reports that dozens of people gathered at the dam to catch a glimpse of the replica of the Lady Washington, which made landfall in the West in 1787. The 638-foot-long McNary Dam holds 38 million gallons of water.
