GRANTS PASS, Oe. (AP) – State officials say Oregon is in good shape to meet the lower carbon emissions goals for power plants set by President Obama’s new plan for combating climate change. The Clean Power Plan issued by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency sets a goal of a 20 percent reduction from levels in 2012 for Oregon.

CANYONVILLE, Ore. (AP) – Cool and cloudy weather is helping firefighters make progress on two wildfires in the foothills of the Cascades of southwestern Oregon. Smoke continues to choke communities to the south in the Rogue Valley. The Oregon Department of Forestry says the Stouts fire is 5 percent contained after burning through 24 square miles of private and federal timber 16 miles east of Canyonville.

SALEM, Ore. (AP) – Residents near the Rickreall Creek in northwest Oregon are being asked to voluntarily reduce water use to benefit neighbors downstream. The Statesman Journal reports senior water rights essentially allow the city of Dallas to drain the creek dry, but low flows caused by high temperatures have officials trying to prevent that. The city lets a million gallons of water per day flow past its intake point.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – The Oregon Department of Corrections says an inmate who escaped from a Portland prison did so by breaking a kitchen door and window. The agency asks the public to be on the lookout for 35-year-old Danny Spillers, who has been missing since Sunday morning. Spillers went to prison two months ago on convictions of burglary and unauthorized use of a vehicle out of Multnomah County.
