CANYONVILLE, Ore. (AP) – A fire burning in forestland in southwest Oregon has spread to more than 23 square miles, according to more accurate mapping of the blaze. About 35 families have been evacuated from their homes and another 100 families have been told to prepare to leave. Although the fire was still growing yesterday, fire team spokesman Dave Wells says they were not expecting explosive growth. Wells says the day is overcast and misty rain has been falling.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – A deepening drought in the Pacific Northwest is forcing some cities, farms and state agencies to cut back on water use. The Oregonian reports 11 cities and towns across Oregon have imposed some form of water conservation. Those range from simply asking residents to exercise restraint to threatening $300 fines for anyone who turns on the hose without permission. Earlier this week, Oregon Gov. Kate Brown ordered all state agencies to limit water use in an effort to reduce the state government’s water budget by 15 percent over the next five years.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – A man serving time for a burglary conviction has escaped from an Oregon Prison by breaking a kitchen window. State officials say they discovered Danny Spillers was missing from the Columbia River Correctional Institution in Portland around 5:30 a.m. yesterday after discovering the broken window. The Department of Corrections says the 35-year-old began his sentence in the minimum security prison in June.

WARRENTON, Ore. (AP) – An Oregon energy company that wants to export liquefied natural gas has lost a lawsuit regarding a land easement. The Daily Astorian reports a federal magistrate judge found Oregon LNG’s challenge to a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ easement on the Skipanon Peninsula in Warrenton should be dismissed because the statute of limitations had expired. Oregon LNG claimed the Corps has no right to land beneath the water the company intends to use for an export terminal and pipeline project.
