SEATTLE (AP) – Paul Goldschmidt hit his 22nd homer of the season in the first inning and scored the go-ahead run in the 10th on Jake Lamb’s sacrifice fly as the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the Seattle Mariners 4-3 last night. The Diamondbacks won their third straight despite blowing a 3-2 lead in the ninth inning. They took advantage of control issues by Seattle closer Carson Smith (1-4) in the 10th to regain the lead.

SEATTLE (AP) – Mariners manager Lloyd McClendon thinks struggling reliever Fernando Rodney is tipping his pitches, causing some of his problems. McClendon said before yesterday’s series opener with Arizona that his staff has been watching tape and there are some “dramatic” things that stand out and may have helped batters know what pitch is coming from the right-hander. Rodney was pulled from the closer role in early June, but his struggles have continued.

CLEVELAND (AP) – A person familiar with the trade says the Cavaliers have traded forward Mike Miller and center Brendan Haywood to Portland to create salary-cap room and save luxury-tax money. The Cavs have been shopping Haywood’s expiring $10.5 million contract deal for weeks and worked out a deal with the Blazers, who will also get two second-round picks from Cleveland, said the person who spoke yesterday to the Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the deal is pending league approval.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – U.S. soccer formally announced that midfielders Shannon Boxx and Lauren Holiday will retire from the U.S. national team following a victory tour to celebrate the Women’s World Cup title. Both players had previously voiced their intention to step down from the team. U.S. Soccer said Monday that Boxx, 38, will also retire immediately from the NWSL’s Chicago Red Stars.
