Here is the latest Oregon news from The Associated Press

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Oregon officials are prohibiting fishing or curtailing fishing hours on most rivers to protect fish already suffering from the drought. Fish and Wildlife officials say fishing angling for trout, salmon, steelhead and sturgeon will be prohibited on portions of the Willamette, Clackamas and John Day rivers.

SALEM, Ore. (AP) – The Oregon Court of Appeals says the city of Salem should not have allowed a hospital to cut down nine trees to make room for a parking lot. The Statesman Journal reports the city had approved Salem Hospital’s parking plan on the former Oregon School for the Blind property assuming that the proposal was for the entire hospital campus, not a smaller area.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – The Portland City Council has authorized the purchase of land identified as a likely new spot for a homeless community. Members okayed spending $254,000 to buy land in the central eastside, which may be the new home for the Right 2 Dream Too homeless camp currently in Portland’s downtown. Right 2 Dream Too began as an unsanctioned campsite in Old Town Chinatown in 2011.

ROSEBURG, Ore. (AP) – A man accused of killing his grandfather and opening fire on detectives in Roseburg has been sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Jonathan Lackey had pleaded no contest to aggravated murder and first-degree arson and pleaded guilty to five counts of attempting to commit murder. His grandfather Richard Casebeer was found dead in his home after a house fire in 2012.
