SALEM, Ore. (AP) – Oregon’s unemployment rate ticked up slightly to 5.5 percent in June, even as the labor participation rate hit its lowest recorded level. The seasonally adjusted jobless rate is up from 5.3 percent in May. The Oregon Employment Department says the uptick is typically driven by an influx of recent graduates, students on summer break and people moving to Oregon.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Police arrested an Oregon woman accused of hiring a felon to kill her ex-husband in Saratoga Springs, Utah. A U.S. criminal complaint filed in Eugene last week says the man decided to instead warn the ex-husband, who then alerted authorities. Pamela Gygi of Westlake is being held at the Lane County Jail in Eugene.
ALBANY, Ore. (AP) – A lawsuit filed by a police officer against the city of Albany has been settled out of court for $225,000. The Albany Democrat-Herald reports that officer Steve Corder filed a complaint in 2012 claiming that he hadn’t been promoted because he had repeatedly called for the Albany Police Department to address a backlog of uninvestigated sex crimes.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Members of Oregon’s Congressional delegation have asked the Defense Department to reach a settlement with 12 Oregon National Guard soldiers who said they were sickened by a toxic chemical during the Iraq War. The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in May overturned an $85 million jury award to the soldiers. The military contractor Kellogg, Brown and Root successfully argued that Oregon was not the proper jurisdiction for the case. KBR now seeks $850,000 in legal fees.
