SEATTLE (AP) – Jefry Marte got an RBI double for his first major league hit, then added a solo home run yesterday that sent the Detroit Tigers over the Seattle Mariners 5-4. Marte made his big league debut last Sunday and had struck out in his only at-bat. The 24-year-old played first base while the Tigers are minus injured Miguel Cabrera.

NEW YORK (AP) – Seattle’s Nelson Cruz has the longest home run in the major leagues this season and Miami’s Giancarlo Stanton has the three longest in the NL, according to the sport’s new Statcast computer system. MLB announced its first season leaderboards yesterday. Cruz hit a drive projected at 483 feet against Texas’ Wandy Rodriguez on April 29.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) – Lynetta Kizer scored a season-high 17 points and Indiana rolled over the Seattle Storm 88-65 yesterday for the Fever’s third straight win. Marissa Coleman reached double figures for a team-best eighth time this season with 15 points, and Tamika Catchings added 12 for the Fever, who shot 50 percent. Indiana (6-6) won by 23 points for the second straight game and reached .500 for the first time since July 10, 2014.

PULLMAN, Wash. (AP) – Matt Chazanow has been hired as the play-by-play announcer for Washington State football, men’s basketball and baseball games. Chazanow replaces Bud Nameck on the football and men’s basketball broadcasts.
