OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) – Seattle rookie Mike Montgomery put together another fine start, pitching the Mariners past the Oakland Athletics 2-1 yesterday. Coming off two straight shutouts, Montgomery (4-2) gave up one run and six hits in 5 2-3 innings. He walked one and struck out two. Montgomery was trying to join Randy Johnson as the only players in franchise history to pitch three consecutive shutouts. Sam Fuld homered in the third for the A’s.

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) – Seattle Mariners manager Lloyd McClendon will miss his team’s upcoming three-game series against the Detroit Tigers to attend a funeral for his sister. McClendon was expected to fly back to Seattle with the team following its game in Oakland, then will travel to Indiana to be with his family.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Jack Jewsbury scored in second-half stoppage time to give the Portland Timbers a 1-0 victory over the San Jose Earthquakes last night. Portland has now won six of its last seven MLS matches.

ATLANTA (AP) – Angel McCoughtry scored 23 points and the Atlanta Dream held off the Seattle Storm 72-64 yesterday. Tiffany Hayes, returning to the Dream (5-6) along with Aneika Henry after the pair missed five games while playing for Azerbaijan in a 3-on-3 tournament in Europe, added 12 points. Jewell Loyd scored 12 points for Seattle (3-9), which has lost seven of its last eight.
