DAYVILLE, Ore. (AP) – Slightly cooler temperatures and higher humidity have helped firefighters get a better handle on a large fire burning in central Oregon about 11 miles south of Dayville. A fire incident spokesman says one cabin has burned and other structures on scattered ranches are threatened. The blaze has burned nearly 26,000 acres, or about 40 square miles, on the west side of the South Fork John Day River. It was about 10 percent contained.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Portland police say a man stabbed a police officer and was shot early yesterday in northeast Portland. The officer and the man were taken to Portland hospitals with injuries not considered life-threatening. Their identities were not released. It was not clear what led to the incident. Detectives are investigating.

SEASIDE, Ore. (AP) – Pacific Power says power was restored to thousands of customers in the Oregon coast town of Seaside after an outage Saturday night. The outage affected about 8,000 customers in the Seaside area. The utility says power was restored after about five hours. KGW-TV in Portland reports that that Seaside police say it was caused by transformer failure at a Seaside substation.

HERMISTON, Ore. (AP) – This summer’s hot weather has been good for the watermelon crop in Hermiston, with farmers harvesting a couple of weeks ahead of schedule. The East Oregonian newspaper says triple-digit temperatures during the day and cool nights in the region help produce sweeter melons. Harvest typically lasts through early October with sales peaking around Labor Day.
