SALEM, Ore. (AP) – A proposal to raise Oregon’s gas tax, pay for road and bridge construction, and repeal a carbon-reduction initiative get a public airing in the state Senate today. The proposal would raise the gas tax by 4 cents per gallon and hike other fees to raise money for roads, bridges, airports and transit projects.

ROCKAWAY BEACH, Ore. (AP) – Fire officials at Rockaway Beach on the north Oregon coast say an adult and two juveniles who were caught in a rip tide yesterday are safe. KPTV of Portland reports that the three were on boogie boards when the tide caught them and pulled them away from shore. The juveniles were able to catch a wave back in but the adult was pushed farther out. A Coast Guard helicopter rescued the adult.

OREGON CITY, Ore. (AP) – A Clackamas firefighter is recovering at a Portland hospital after a large piece of sheetrock fell 15 feet from a ceiling and landed on his head during firefighting operations in Oregon City. Fire District spokesman Brandon Paxton says the homeowner was able to escape safely with his three dogs. Fire crews controlled the fire.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – A sentencing hearing for a juvenile convicted of attacking and molesting fellow students ended with the brother of one victim being shot with a stun gun after the defendant’s and victim’s families began arguing. The Oregonian reports that a plainclothes deputy grabbed onto the teen’s stepfather and a courtroom deputy used his Taser on the victim’s brother, who appeared to have taken a swing or two into the air.
