SALEM, Ore. (AP) – The state lawmakers preparing for Oregon’s legal marijuana program are supporting a sales tax for the drug. A joint House-Senate committee has approved a sales tax of up to 20 percent, setting the stage for a vote in the full House. The sales tax would replace a tax on growers that was originally approved by voters as part of last year’s Measure 91.

SALEM, Ore. (AP) – Oregon Senate lawmakers have approved a measure making it a felony to secretly record someone while they’re nude and in a private area. The measure increases penalties for someone who sneaks a camera into a private room and records the occupants without their knowledge. Supporters say prosecutors are often hamstrung by the current invasion-of-privacy laws, which classify nonconsensual recordings as misdemeanors and aren’t harsh enough for the crime.

SALEM, Ore. (AP) – Oregon Gov. Kate Brown has signed a bill making it easier for parents to opt their children out of standardized tests. Brown’s signature followed warnings by federal officials that Oregon could lose education funding if too many students opt out. The Democratic governor says in a statement that teachers should be sure parents understand the value of tests.

TIGARD, Ore. (AP) – A police spokesman in the southwest Portland suburb of Tigard (TYE-gard) says a 76-year-old woman was injured when a car crashed through the front windows of the local post office. A Tigard police spokesman says the victim was standing at the customer service counter when the car drove through the front floor-to-ceiling windows. She was taken to a hospital with what appeared to be non-life-threatening injuries.
