SALEM, Ore. (AP) – Democrats in the state House are proposing tax increases that target premium cigars, some businesses and some individual taxpayers. Several Republicans objected to marrying tax credits and tax increases in a single bill. That move allows Democrats to avoid the supermajority vote required of bills that increase revenue.

PENDLETON, Ore. (AP) – A man fatally shot himself outside a Pendleton hospital. The East Oregonian newspaper reports the man died outside a red pickup in the parking lot at St. Anthony Hospital. Police Chief Stuart Roberts said officers must talk to the man’s family before identifying him.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Police in Portland say an Aberdeen, Washington man has been cited for careless driving with an accident in the wake of a March 7 multi-vehicle traffic crash on Interstate 5 that fatally injured a 7-year-old Washington girl. Authorities say 24-year-old Bennett Rowe was cited last week after the Multnomah County district attorney’s office reviewed the case and found no criminal wrongdoing.

SALEM, Ore. (AP) – The Marion County sheriff’s office says a 17-year-old boy pulled from the water at Salmon Falls Park east of Salem, Oregon, has died. He was not identified pending notification of relatives. Earlier, authorities said bystanders rescued the teen after he went into the water yesterday afternoon and failed to surface. The bystanders also started CPR and continued until emergency crews reached the boy. He was taken to a hospital. The park is on the Little Northfork of the Santiam River about 40 miles east of Salem.
