SEATTLE (AP) – Felix Hernandez pitched eight innings of four-hit ball, Austin Jackson delivered a go-ahead RBI triple in the sixth, and the Seattle Mariners beat the San Francisco Giants 2-0 last night. Hernandez (10-4) allowed four hits, struck out five and walked two to rebound from the worst outing of his career. The Mariners’ ace allowed a runner to reach scoring position twice, but both times he quickly retired the side by inducing a groundout.
PHOENIX (AP) – Paul Goldschmidt and Welington Castillo each hit a solo home run, and the Arizona Diamondbacks held on to beat the Los Angeles Angels 3-2 last night. Both homers came off Hector Santiago (4-4). Yasmany Tomas had three hits for Arizona, including an RBI triple.
UNIVERSITY PLACE, Wash. (AP) – The name has become as common at this U.S. Open as Rory McIlroy and Jordan Spieth, Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods. And Mike Davis isn’t even playing. Davis is the head of the USGA and the man largely responsible for this major championship coming to Chambers Bay. More than that, however, he might be responsible for just how hard it will play. It’s his job to make sure Chambers Bay doesn’t get so out of control that it turns the toughest test into an impossible test.
UNDATED (AP) – The Seattle Sounders will host the San Jose Earthquakes on Saturday at CenturyLink Field. The Sounders are coming off a 3-0 victory against Dallas.
