EUGENE, Ore. (AP) – A retired Lane County judge is taking the sheriff to court over a concealed handgun licensing dispute. The Register-Guard of Eugene reports that retired Circuit Judge James Hargreaves of Eugene has filed court documents that accuse Sheriff Byron Trapp of wrongly denying him a permit to legally carry a concealed handgun. A sheriff’s office spokeswoman said Trapp would not comment on the pending litigation.

MEDFORD, Ore. (AP) – A former food service contract employee at the Jackson County Jail in southern Oregon has been indicted, accused of giving inmates contraband such as alcohol, tobacco and cell phones in exchange for sexual favors. The Mail-Tribune reports that Buddy Gene Arnett of Medford was indicted on charges of custodial sexual misconduct, prostitution and supplying contraband.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Portland Mayor Charlie Hales has been invited to meet Pope Francis next month – one of 16 mayors from around the world to get that opportunity. The mayors are visiting the Vatican as part of a summit to address climate change and human trafficking. Hales’s office says the mayor will meet with leaders from other Oregon cities to coordinate a message for the visit.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Oregon employers took a break when it came to hiring in May. Labor officials say the state posted a seasonally adjusted decline of 1,400 jobs. It’s the first monthly drop since September 2012. Most industries hired close to their normal numbers, but retailers were a notable exception.
