Here is the latest Washington, Oregon and Alaska sports news from The Associated Press

CLEVELAND (AP) – Kyle Seager, batting cleanup in place of ailing Nelson Cruz, hit a grand slam and drove in five runs to lead the Seattle Mariners past the Cleveland Indians 9-3 last night. Seager helped Seattle win for the second straight day at Progressive Field after a 2-9 homestand.

CLEVELAND (AP) – Seattle Mariners slugger Nelson Cruz, who leads the American League with 18 homers, was taken out of the starting lineup because of back spasms. Manager Lloyd McClendon said Cruz felt some tightness in his back during batting practice but thought he could play through it. McClendon didn’t want to take any chances and Cruz was quickly pulled from the game during his third at-bat.

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) – Conor McCullough of USC became the first winner at the NCAA track and field championships with a throw of 252 feet, 4 inches in the hammer yesterday. McCullough, the event’s favorite who didn’t throw collegiately the past two seasons, finished well ahead of the runner-up, defending champion Mathias Tayala of Kent State, who threw 234-9. Greg Skipper of host Oregon was third at 233-9.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) – TPC Southwind looks nothing like Chambers Bay, leaving the St. Jude Classic to offer only that final chance at honing a swing or putting stroke under the mental pressure of competition. That’s more than enough for the likes of Dustin Johnson, Phil Mickelson, Retief Goosen and Graeme McDowell at a course where par is a good score. Mickelson says he feels his game is close despite a tie for 65th at Memorial last week.
