CLEVELAND (AP) – Robinson Cano broke out of a slump with two doubles and an RBI, while five pitchers held Cleveland in check, leading the Seattle Mariners to a 3-2 win over the Indians last night. Roenis Elias (3-3) gave up a solo homer to Yan Gomes in the second, the only run the left-hander allowed in six innings. Gomes homered to lead off the ninth against rookie Carson Smith, the Mariners’ fourth reliever.

CLEVELAND (AP) – Seattle Mariners slugger Nelson Cruz, who leads the American League with 18 home runs, was removed from yesterday’s game against Cleveland with back spasms. Cruz fouled off a pitch from Corey Kluber in the fifth inning. Manager Lloyd McClendon and a Mariners trainer came on the field, and Cruz walked to the dugout after a brief discussion.

TULSA, Okla. (AP) – Riquna Williams scored 14 off the bench and the Tulsa defense completely dominated Seattle as the Shock rolled to a 68-45 win over the Storm last night. Renee Montgomery scored 10 points for Seattle (1-1).

RENTON, Wash. (AP) – Seattle Seahawks All-Pro cornerback Richard Sherman said he was happy to avoid surgery on his injured elbow in the offseason since the procedure likely would have left him sidelined for up to nine months. Sherman initially believed he would need Tommy John surgery on his left elbow after being injured in the NFC Championship game. But after speaking with other players and consulting with doctors, he decided against the surgery for now.
