SEATTLE (AP) – Mark Teixeira hit his ninth career grand slam off Seattle ace Felix Hernandez in the fifth inning and Michael Pineda allowed two runs pitching into the seventh in the Yankees’ 7-2 win over the Mariners last night. The anticipated matchup between two of the top right-handers in the American League met expectations for three innings before Hernandez (8-2) fell apart in stunning fashion. With Hernandez struggling, Teixeira didn’t miss his chance to blow the game open. With only one out in the fifth, Hernandez fell behind 2-0 and grooved a fastball to Teixeira, who hit his 15th homer of the season and sixth career long ball off Hernandez.

SEATTLE (AP) – The Seattle Mariners have sent struggling shortstop Chris Taylor back to the minors while helping their overworked bullpen by recalling right-hander Mayckol Guaipe from Triple-A Tacoma. Seattle made the moves before the series opener against the New York Yankees.

SEATTLE (AP) – Left-hander Chris Capuano will be the odd-man out of the New York Yankees’ rotation when Masahiro Tanaka returns later this week. New York manager Joe Girardi says that Capuano will go the bullpen when Tanaka rejoins the rotation for the season finale against Seattle on Wednesday.

SEATTLE (AP) – The Seattle Sounders have signed Brazilian midfielder Thomas Jaguaribe Bedinelli, who will be eligible to play immediately. Seattle announced the signing of the 22-year-old yesterday; he goes simply by Thomas. The Sounders have already received his international paperwork, making him eligible to play for the club right away.
