NEWPORT, Ore. (AP) – A strong earthquake has rumbled off the Oregon coast but it appeared too distant to cause any problems. The USGS says the magnitude-5.8 temblor struck shortly before 10 last night and was centered in the Pacific nearly 300 miles west of Newport. The USGS says it happened in an active seismic area.

PENDLETON, Ore. (AP) – A 21-year-old man has been arrested after his 10-month daughter was found unresponsive in a car in Pendleton and later died in the hospital. The East Oregonian of Pendleton reports that Travis Martin was arrested Friday night at his Irrigon home on investigation of manslaughter, assault, criminal mistreatment.

BEND, Ore. (AP) – A 20-year-old man has been taken into custody after two callers reported him for being naked and acting suspicious in a park west of Bend. KTVZ-TV reports that when Deschutes County sheriff’s deputies found the man he charged at them. He was subdued and handcuffed without any injuries. The man was taken to St. Charles Bend for evaluation.

CORVALLIS, Ore. (AP) – Benton County leaders plan to ask voters in November for money to replace the Corvallis jail. Board of Commissioners chairman Jay Dixon tells the Corvallis Gazette-Times that a Eugene public relations firm is being hired to lead an information campaign to educate the public on the need for a new jail.
