SEATTLE (AP) – Jerry Sands hit a two-run homer, his first of the season, David Murphy added a pinch-hit RBI single, and the Cleveland Indians beat the Seattle Mariners 4-3 last night. Sands homered in the second inning, driving the ball into the Mariners’ bullpen in left field. Robinson Cano (kan-OH’) homered for the first time since April 14.

COMMERCE CITY, Colo. (AP) – Jack Jewsbury scored in the 93rd minute and the Portland Timbers rallied in stoppage time to beat the Colorado Rapids 2-1 last night. Colorado tied it at 1 in the 89th minute on Sam Cronin’s strike from distance. But, after a nice toe poke from Ishmael Yartey in front of goal, Jewsbury slid a ball past goalkeeper Clint Irwin for the winner.

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (AP) – Scott Heineman hit a two-run double and Shaun Chase a two-run homer in Oregon’s four-run first inning, and the Ducks cruised to a 12-6 victory over Canisius in an elimination game yesterday at the Springfield Regional. Heineman and Chase combined for five hits, five RBIs and five runs for Oregon, which will play Iowa today.

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) – Kirani James won the 400 meters yesterday in the Prefontaine Classic, pulling away from a strong field at Hayward Field. James, the 2012 Olympic champion from Grenada, and American rival LeShawn Merritt ran side by side on the final curve before James turned it on, finishing in a world-best 43.95 seconds, two-hundredths of a second faster than the time he and Merritt ran at the meet this year.
