  1. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) – Felix Hernandez pitched a four-hitter to become the major’s first eight-game winner, Nelson Cruz hit his AL-best 18th homer to snap a scoreless tie in the ninth inning and the Seattle Mariners completed a three-game sweep by beating the Tampa Bay Rays 3-0 yesterday. This is the Mariners’ first three-game road sweep against the Rays since Sept. 2000.

SEATTLE (AP) – Marco Pappa scored in the 16th minute to lift the Seattle Sounders to a 1-0 win over the Colorado Rapids last night, moving them into first place in the Western Conference. Pappa’s goal was his first of the season for the Sounders (7-3-2, 23 points). Goalkeeper Stefan Frei earned his league-leading seventh shutout and his third in a row. Seattle has not allowed a goal at home for 380 minutes, dating back to a 3-2 loss to San Jose on March 14.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Captain Will Johnson returned to Portland’s lineup to help the Timbers beat Eastern Conference-leading D.C. United 1-0 last night. Johnson missed the first 12 games of the season while recovering from a broken right leg suffered on Sept. 27. He played 84 minutes before being substituted out.

QUEBEC CITY (AP) – Philippe Desrosiers made 27 saves and the Rimouski Oceanic beat the host Quebec Remparts 4-0 last night to stave off elimination in the Memorial Cup and force a tiebreaker game. Michael Joly had a goal and three assists, and Justin Samson and Chris Clapperton also scored for the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League champion Oceanic.
