EUGENE, Ore. (AP) – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will no longer be the agency that warns the public about potentially toxic blue-green algae blooms that occur in Oregon lakes that the corps manages. The Register-Guard of Eugene reports that corps officials say they will post permanent signs that explain how to spot an algae bloom and its potential toxicity at the most-used beaches and boat ramps.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – After years of talks and help from former Gov. John Kitzhaber, a developer has made a deal to swap land with Oregon Parks and Recreation on the southern Oregon coast. The state parks commission has agreed to accept several parcels of land, $2.5 million cash, and money to clean up an invasive plant species. In exchange, the state will privatize 280 acres of the public coast so a developer can build a golf course.

ASTORIA, Ore. (AP) – Cmdr. Patrick Culver has taken over as commander of the U.S. Coast Guard cutter Alert based in Astoria. The Daily Astorian reports that Culver takes the place of Cmdr. Brian Anderson as the head of the 47-year-old ship.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – A 7-day-old pygmy-angora goat was returned to its owner just 25 hours after he was reported missing to the Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office. The Oregonian reports that the goat, named Harry Truman, was reported missing after its owner left it alone with its mother briefly Saturday afternoon. The owner says she thinks media attention made the thieves reevaluate their new charge and return him.
