GRANTS PASS, Ore. (AP) – A Josephine County jury has convicted a man in the 2011 ambush killings of his brother and sister-in-law. The Grants Pass Daily Courier reports jurors took only hours to come back with a decision in the trial of 62-year-old Gary Goins of El Dorado County, California. The same jury will now determine whether Goins should face the death penalty. Prosecutors say Goins killed the couple after they cut him off financially.

LOS ANGELES (AP) – A spokesman says the companies that employ West Coast dockworkers have approved a proposed contract that restored labor peace to sea ports that had all but stopped moving cargo earlier this year. The dispute between the Pacific Maritime Association and the International Longshore and Warehouse Union disrupted international trade at 29 West Coast ports that each year handle about $1 trillion worth of goods.

SALEM, Ore. (AP) – A Salem High School teacher won’t face criminal charges after his science experiment seemed to leave burns on several students who volunteered. The Salem Statesman Journal reports that 37-year-old Samuel Dufner was arrested on May 5 and charged with two counts of criminal mistreatment. Dufner was using a Tesla coil to teach students about chemical reactions.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Several Oregon senators and representatives are pushing for funding to clean up and reduce toxins in the Columbia River Basin. The bill seeks to authorize $50 million per year for five years for a grant program. Tribes, farmers, foresters, conservation districts, nonprofit groups, and local and state governments could apply for the funds.
