Vehicle Registration Fee defeated at polls

Voters in Lane County said no, in a loud way, to a proposal that would have nearly doubled the registration fees paid on most vehicles. The approximately $11-million generated by the proposed $35-per-year-per-vehicle fee would have paid for road and bridge repairs and maintenance.

But… voters said no by a nearly two-to-one margin.

Just under 35-percent of Lane County’s 206-thousand registered voters returned ballots in yesterday’s mail-in election. Of those, 46,925… just a shade under two-thirds… voted no; while 23,855… just a shade over one-third… said yes.

Lane County Commission Chair Jay Bozievich released a statement just 12-minutes after the polls closed last night… after initial results showed the measure failing by a wide margin. In his statement he said he appreciated the “thoughtful evaluation” given by Lane County Voters. He said the Commission knows they have “more work to do” and find a “balanced approach” to supporting what he called “critical local services.”

Fire board incumbents out

There were several contested races for special district boards on the ballot yesterday. There will be a considerable turnover on the Siuslaw Valley Fire and Rescue Board after three incumbents were defeated by challengers. Woody Woodbury edged 24-year fire board veteran Steve Olienyk by 179 votes… 1894 to 1715. John Carnahan came out on top in a three way race with 2257 votes. Cindy Spinner currently holds the spot, she garnered 1,083 votes and Ave Bernard had 199. In the third contested race, Tony Phillips came away with 2,649 votes to Rob Ward’s 1,047.

Port Commission and Ambulance Board

There were two other contested races on the ballot locally. Nancy Rickard easily won reelection to her Port of Siuslaw Commission spot. She beat Bill Reagan by a 2,018 to 1,327 margin. In one race for the Western Lane Ambulance District board Cindy Russell gathered 2,043 votes to displace incumbent Karl Enlund. He had 986 votes. Former Florence City Councilor Brian Jagoe was a distant third with 539 votes.

 Siuslaw School Board

There were three candidates filed for the five open spots on the Siuslaw School Board. Current Chair Tammy Butler will return to the panel as will Suzanne Mann-Heintz. They’ll be joined by Guy Rosinbaum, a newcomer. There will likely be two others coming to the panel as there were numerous write-in votes for the two remaining spots. They’ll take several days to be counted.

Active Shooter Training at Siuslaw Middle School

Local law enforcement and education officials want to make sure the public knows there will be several well-armed police officers in and around Siuslaw Middle School this Friday.

No students will be in any classrooms that day. That’s because all of their teachers, aides, and administrators will be learning how to help protect students and coordinate with first responders in the event of an emergency.

Florence Police Chief Tom Turner said they want to protect kids and keep the community safe. Friday’s training on the “ALICE” system will allow his officers to work within the school.

ALICE stands for Alert; Lockdown; Inform; Counter; and Evacuate. It’s the newest standard when it comes to responding to armed invaders in a school and it goes beyond the concept of simply locking down.

In addition to Florence police officers, there will be participation by Lane County Sheriff’s Deputies, Oregon State Police and tribal police.
