PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Oregon is about to embark on a first-in-the-nation program that aims to charge car owners not for the fuel they use, but for the miles they drive. The program will test whether the state can raise more revenue to pay for road and bridge projects at a time when gasoline tax revenues are declining. Some electric and hybrid car owners say the tax would be unfair to them.

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) – State Police say the driver of a delivery truck was killed near Eugene when a car hit a small deer and sent it crashing through the truck’s windshield. The truck driver was identified as 37-year-old Jesse Bastien of Eugene. The car driver was not hurt in the mishap yesterday on Oregon 126. The deer was killed.

SALEM, Ore. (AP) – An Oregon Senate panel has advanced legislation prohibiting people from keeping their firearms if they’ve been convicted of domestic violence or are under a restraining order. The bill sponsor has said Oregon doesn’t currently have a law preventing domestic violence offenders from possessing a gun. The bill now heads to the full Senate.

NORTH BEND, Ore. (AP) – A Coast Guard helicopter crew from North Bend on the southern Oregon coast has flown an ailing crewman from a commercial fishing vessel 30 miles off northern California to waiting medics on shore.
