PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Portland police say an officer has shot a person who broke into someone else’s home after reportedly cutting himself with a knife. No details about what prompted the shooting were immediately available. The subject’s age and condition were not released. Police said officers initially were responding to a report that the subject had been cutting himself at one home, which he had fled.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Portland police say 27-year-old man is due to be arraigned today after he ran over a woman who got out of his car following a bar fight. Officers say the pair sped off after a large fight at the White Eagle bar, but they only made it about a block before the vehicle crashed into a post. The driver has been identified as Avery Camacho.

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) – Eugene is mulling a sidewalk smoking ban. The Register-Guard newspaper reports that the City Council is set to discuss whether it should ban smoking on downtown sidewalks and in other outdoor public places, such as the Park Blocks and Broadway Plaza. No vote is expected yet for Wednesday.

SALEM, Ore. (AP) – Officials are keeping an eye on a toxic bloom of blue-green algae at Detroit Lake, but they say so far Salem’s drinking water remains safe. The lake is 46 miles southeast of Salem on the North Santiam River, which is the source of Salem’s drinking water. The Statesman Journal reports that the city tests samples at Detroit Lake and at the river weekly between April and October.
