SEATTLE (AP) – James Shields became the first San Diego pitcher since 2007 to start the season 5-0, Will Middlebrooks homered for the first time in nearly a month, and the Padres ended the Seattle Mariners four-game win streak 4-2 last night. Cory Spangenberg added a sacrifice fly in the third and Abraham Almonte had an RBI single in the seventh as the Padres split the brief two-game series.

VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) – Gershon Koffie scored in the 87th minute and the Vancouver Whitecaps tied FC Edmonton 1-1 last night in the first leg of their Canadian Championship semifinal series. Tomi Ameobi scored for Edmonton of the lower-tier North American Soccer League. The second leg is next week in Edmonton.

BANDON, Ore (AP) – The United States Golf Association has chosen Bandon Dunes to be the site of the 2020 U.S. Amateur tournament. The event will be held in August of that year and use two of the four courses at the revered golf resort on the south Oregon Coast. It will be the sixth USGA championship held at Bandon Dunes, including this week’s U.S. Women’s Amateur Four-Ball at the resort’s Pacific Dunes Course.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) – Kyle Busch is eligible to compete for the NASCAR championship despite missing the first 11 races this season because of injuries suffered in a crash. NASCAR has announced that it has granted Busch a waiver that would allow the Joe Gibbs Racing star to qualify for the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship.
