Oliver named Athlete of the Week

Viking Track and Field standout Carissa Oliver is Coast Radio Sports’ Athlete of the week. The sophomore thrower holds the longest throw in the 4A ranks so far this year in the discus… 124-feet-five-inches. She got that in a victory at the Wally Ciochetti Invitational last week in Cottage Grove. In addition to being the top mark in the state this year, it’s also the fifth longest all time throw at Siuslaw. Oliver also set personal records in two other events in Cottage Grove, in the shot put: 34-feet-five-inches; and in the javelin: 93-feet-six-inches.

Honorable mention goes to Joseph Dotson. He set the all-time Siuslaw record in the 300 intermediate hurdles with a win in Cottage Grove. His time of 39.33 seconds moved him past Collin Cram who set the previous mark of 39.84 seconds in 2004. Dotson also moved up to number four on the all-time Siuslaw list in winning the 400 meters with a time of 50.78 seconds.

Prep baseball and softball

The final week of Far West League baseball and softball gets underway today… hopefully. Viking Softball is scheduled to be at home against the Douglas Trojans at five… Viking Baseball will be in Winston, also at five, against the Trojans at Douglas High School. That game is slated to air on Coast Radio Sports beginning at 4:45.
