EUGENE, Ore. (AP) – Two Oregon teenagers who sought to force state lawmakers to work harder on a plan to reduce carbon emissions and help stave off climate change have struck out a second time with a state judge. Lane County Circuit Court Judge Karsten Rasmussen yesterday agreed with the state argument that a judge lacks authority to essentially rewrite state laws. The case was filed in 2011 when plaintiffs Kelsey Juliana and Olivia Chernaik were 15 and 11 years old.

SALEM, Ore. (AP) – An Oregon legislative committee overseeing legal marijuana has reached an impasse on a bill aimed at cutting off the flow of medical marijuana to the black market. The bill’s future is in doubt after the joint committee was unable to reach a compromise yesterday. Lawmakers could not agree on the process for local governments to ban medical marijuana dispensaries or other pot facilities within their boundaries.

LEBANON, Ore. (AP) – Fire officials in Lebanon, Oregon, say a man was critically burned and a woman suffered serious burn injuries when a lit cigarette accidentally ignited propane inside a motorhome. The Register-Guard newspaper of Eugene reports firefighters found the two people on the ground near the burning RV. Officials say the propane built up as the occupants tried unsuccessfully to light the furnace in the motorhome.

MEDFORD, Ore. (AP) – The lawyer for a southern Oregon man on trial for murder says the man fatally shot his girlfriend by accident when he was trying to stop her nagging so he could sleep. The Medford Mail Tribune reports that jurors in Robert Simonson’s murder trial heard in opening statements yesterday that the case will hinge on whether they believe Simonson intended to kill Kimberly Staack on Nov. 1, 2013.
