SALEM, Ore. (AP) – Oregon Democrats have muscled through legislation expanding background checks to cover nearly every private firearm sale in the state. House lawmakers have passed a bill making it illegal to transfer a gun to someone who isn’t a close relative. Private sales would have to take place in front of a licensed gun dealer who can run a background check. The bill would make Oregon the eighth state with universal background checks.

SALEM, Ore. (AP) – The Oregon Senate is unanimously backing Gov. Kate Brown’s bill ordering a review of the state’s compliance with public records laws. The approval sends the measure to the Oregon House. Brown’s bill would order the secretary of state’s office to conduct an audit of how state agencies retain and disclose public documents.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Police in Portland say investigators are looking into the possibility that a woman found dead after her vehicle plunged into the Columbia River may have driven into the water intentionally. Police say they have learned the 49-year-old woman had a history of mental health issues, including previous attempts to end her life.

MEDFORD, Ore. (AP) – The Medford City Council plans to go after blighted buildings, with new rules that could force boarded-up structures to be torn down more quickly. The Mail Tribune reports the council has agreed to work on a new ordinance that would provide deadlines for the property owners to demolish or remodel the buildings. Currently, the city has no limit on how long a building can be boarded up.
