HOUSTON (AP) – Evan Gattis homered twice and the Houston Astros won their 10th straight game, boosting the best record in the American League by beating the Seattle Mariners 7-6 yesterday. The Astros extended their top run since a 12-game winning streak in 2004. At 18-7, Houston set a team record for its best record through 25 games. The Astros are coming off a 70-92 season, which followed three straight years of at least 106 losses.

NEW YORK (AP) – Obafemi Martins scored twice, Clint Dempsey had a goal and an assist and the Seattle Sounders beat New York City FC 3-1 last night. Seattle (4-2-1) won its third straight game – and fourth in its last five – while NYCFC (0-5-2) had its winless streak reach seven matches. Martins ran down a through ball and slotted a breakaway goal in the 23rd minute. He won another 1-on-1 battle with goalkeeper Josh Saunders in the 66th minute when he rolled in a goal after Dempsey’s cleaver back-heel pass.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – The return of Portland Timbers’ Diego Valeri from an ACL injury was the highlight of the team’s 0-0 draw with the Vancouver Whitecaps on Saturday night. Valeri, the Timbers’ top goal-scorer for the last two seasons, has been out of action since tearing his left ACL on Oct. 25. Portland (2-3-4) has missed Valeri’s touch this season, netting just seven goals in nine games.

RENTON, Wash. (AP) – U.S. Army veteran and former Texas long snapper Nate Boyer says he has agreed to sign with the Seattle Seahawks as an undrafted free agent. In an interview on NFL Network on Saturday, Boyer said he was called by Seattle coach Pete Carroll after the draft concluded. Boyer, 34, was part of the U.S. Army Special Forces in Afghanistan and earned a Bronze Star. Boyer also served in Iraq. Boyer walked on to the football program at Texas and learned how to become a long snapper.
