SALEM, Ore. (AP) – The Oregon Senate voted to kill a bill that would have made it illegal to sit on the floor or on someone’s lap in a moving vehicle. The move came after legislative leaders determined the bill didn’t have enough support to pass. Current law in Oregon allows vehicle passengers to forgo seatbelts if all of them are being used.
Democratic Sen. Alan Bates of Medford has said he brought the bill because two children sitting in the back of an SUV without seatbelts were killed five years ago when the driver lost control.
OREGON CITY, Ore. (AP) – Police in Oregon City have arrested a 37-year-old woman accused of causing the death of a 7-month-old boy she was baby-sitting. Authorities say Sarah Martin of Oregon City was arrested yesterday and booked into jail for investigation of first-degree manslaughter in the April 7 death of little Izaak Gillen. Bail was set at $250,000.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – A Florida supplier pleaded guilty to bribing Portland’s former parking manager to win contracts for the city’s smart meter program. George Levey was an executive with Schlumberger Industries before becoming owner and president of Cale Parking Systems. Levey is scheduled to be sentenced Aug. 11.
SALEM, Ore. (AP) – The Oregon Corrections Department says a white powdery substance found in an envelope at the state penitentiary mail room in Salem was not hazardous. A spokeswoman says one staff member directly exposed to the powder was taken to Salem Hospital to be checked.
