SALEM, Ore. (AP) – Oregon lawmakers are considering a proposal to prohibit domestic violence offenders from keeping their firearms if they’ve been convicted by a court or are under a restraining order. Under the bill, Oregon law enforcement officials would be able to confiscate the firearms of people convicted of misdemeanor domestic violence against an intimate partner. Gun rights groups oppose the measure, saying it goes beyond federal law.

SALEM, Ore. (AP) – The Oregon Senate has voted to ban ivory sales in an effort to tamp down on poaching that has reduced elephant populations. The vote followed strong objections from Republicans, who said the move would render relics worthless and put dealers out of business without saving any elephants. Supporters of the bill say federal laws are insufficient to crack down on trafficking of ivory.

PENDLETON, Ore. (AP) – A Pendleton prison is waging its annual battle to get swallows out of the building’s nooks and crannies before they lay eggs. The Pendleton East Oregonian reports that inmates at the Eastern Oregon Correctional Institution spray high-powered hoses to knock out the persistent birds’ nests. Federal law says the prison will have to leave them be once they start laying eggs. Swallows can carry insects and disease.

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) – The dilapidated roof over a 78-year-old Civic Stadium is the first repair in line for the Eugene Civic Alliance, a nonprofit group of community activists that bought the property in a long-awaited deal. The Eugene Register-Guard reports the city sold the property, minus a half acre, to the nonprofit organization for nearly $4.1 million.
