Suspect in Lane County Jail facing 14 charges
A Florence area man is facing several charges, among them attempted murder, kidnapping and sexual abuse after police arrested him in Florence Friday. 41-year old Jason Ryan Gordon is accused of assaulting a woman, cutting her with a knife, and then taking her from her home. The identity of the woman has not been released.
Lane County Sheriff’s deputies received a report Friday morning of a man chasing a woman on foot on Highway 101 approximately four-miles north of Florence. Deputies responded but were unable to locate either party.
A sheriff’s lieutenant patrolling the area after the call spotted a man and a woman matching the description in the parking lot at Fred Meyer.
Gordon was taken into custody and lodged at the Lane County Jail on charges related to multiple domestic violence incidents that reportedly occurred between he and the woman over the past five months.
The case is currently under investigation.
Wildfire Preparedness Day this Saturday
Fire officials say the 2014 fire season was severe in Oregon… and they’re not expecting anything different in 2015.
More than three-quarters of a million Oregonians live in forested areas in the state. That makes them vulnerable to wildfire.
According to Cindy Kolomechuk with the Oregon Department of Forestry, surviving wildfire takes preparation. Creating what firefighters call a “defensible space” around your home can “make all the difference in the world” she adds.
She’s urging forestland residents to participate in this Saturday’s “Preparedness Day”.
Residents are urged to take a good look at their landscaping… keep it maintained and give firefighters a ‘space’ that they can use to defend the home from wildfire. She also says if you clear brush from around your home… chip it or haul it away. Don’t leave it piled where it can dry out and become a fire hazard.
Voter Registration Deadline
Elections officials are making the “final call” for people who want to participate in the May 19th election. If you’re not registered to vote, today is the deadline.
Lane County Clerk Cheryl Betschart says there are several ways to do that. Deliver a completed voter registration card to the Elections Office in Eugene no later than four pm today.
Or, you can mail it… but it must have today’s postmark.
The third, and easiest method, would be to register online.
If you have a valid Oregon Driver’s License or DMV-issued identification card or learner’s permit you can complete the online form and submit it electronically by 11:59 tonight.
Betschart says you can do that at the Lane County Elections website.
Ballots for the May 19th election are scheduled to be mailed this Friday.
Fence jumpers apprehended
Two inmates who jumped a fence at a minimum security prison in northern Coos County have been recaptured.
39-year old Daniel Oliver Fullmer, who was serving time from Jackson County for methamphetamine possession was taken into custody about 1:30 yesterday morning near Lakeside.
He and 44-year old Harlan Earl Brown were reported missing at 7:30 Sunday morning after missing a check-in.
Brown was captured just before noon yesterday in Coos Bay. He was serving time from Clackamas County for burglary and theft.
